Kieran Nugent, Belfast, N Ireland,  volunteer, Provisional IRA, who was sentenced to 3 years jail for hijacking a car in September 1976. Upon arriving at the Maze Prison he refused to wear a prison uniform. When not provided with alternative clothing he wrapped himself in a blanket from his cell beginning what developed into the Blanket Protest in which he was joined by other prisoners. Three years earlier Nugent was seriously injured in a shooting by a loyalist gunman. His 16 year old friend, Bernard McErlean, died in the attack. 197609000515a<br />
